Legendary singer Michael McDonald is adding his voice to a growing list of musicians who have spoken out against former President Donald Trump. In a recent talk with Classic Rock magazine, the soulful Doobie Brothers front man said he believes the United States is heading into dangerous territory. “These are perilous times,” McDonald warned. “We are staring down a dark channel that could lead to totalitarianism.”
He went on to say that he feels Trump cares more about personal fame than public service. “We have a guy who does not want to be President of the United States as much as he wants to be the center of everything,” he said. McDonald encouraged fellow citizens to “stand up and say our piece” about the direction of the country.
This is not the first time well-known artists have criticized the former president. Bruce Springsteen, Bono, and many others have taken similar public stands. McDonald says musicians should not stay silent when they see something they think is wrong. He hopes fans will listen, think, and vote.
Despite his worries about politics, McDonald is excited about new music on the way. The Doobie Brothers are set to release their latest album, Walk This Road, this Friday, June 6.
