NBA Hall of Famer and businessman Magic Johnson is continuing his commitment to uplifting the next generation. On May 9, 2025, he pledged $500,000 to Xavier University of Louisiana to support student scholarships and academic programs. The generous gift came during a special event that honored Dr. Norman C. Francis, the first Black president of Xavier University and a true icon in education and civil rights.
Dr. Francis, who is now 94, led the school for an incredible 47 years. He began his journey at Xavier as a student and later returned to serve in many roles before becoming president in 1968. Under his leadership, the university grew in both size and reputation. He helped shape the school’s core curriculum and oversaw the construction of most of the buildings on campus. His impact is seen in Xavier's national rankings for producing Black graduates in science, pharmacy, and medicine.
To honor Dr. Francis, Xavier unveiled a bronze statue of him during a heartfelt ceremony in the St. Katharine Drexel Chapel. Rain didn’t stop the celebration, and the school community came out in full support.
Magic Johnson praised Dr. Francis, saying, “I’m so blessed to know him... all the people you’ve helped become successful.”
