NBA star Michael Porter Jr. has sparked debate on social media after he revealed he splits rent with his ex-girlfriend despite his $207 million contract.
During a recent appearance on "Respectfully Justin," the Brooklyn Nets star opened up about going 50/50 on rent with his ex-partner after signing a massive $207 million deal. Porter. who is one of the NBA’s highest-paid players, signed a $179.3 million contract with the Denver Nuggets in 2021, which could total $207 million with bonuses, according to ESPN.
Porter explained that during his relationship, his ex-girlfriend found an apartment she liked but couldn't afford. The basketball star agreed to cover the difference, even if they broke up, which happened six months later.
“I’m like, man, do I keep helping her out or is it cooked?” Porter said.
Despite initially committing to pay the difference for a year, Porter said he held off after the breakup because he didn’t like how she was acting.
“She needs to act right month to month,” he said. “If I see she’s wildin’, it’s going to be hard to continue that agreement... Get that next dude to pay that rent.”
When host Justin Laboy called the move “cheap,” Porter pushed back, saying he wanted to make sure women are with him for the right reasons.
“Every dude in this particular person’s past had money. So I never wanted to feel like a girl was just with me because of what I have," he said.
Porter added that he doesn't believe in living with a girlfriend before marriage.
Porter’s comments got the internet buzzing, with social users debating whether a man making $38.3 million a year should really be splitting bills.
