A New York police detective is facing hate crime charges after allegedly hurling racial slurs and damaging a Black cell phone technician's vehicle, per NY Daily News.
According to prosecutors, Rockville Center Detective John Murphy confronted the phone tech in Manorville earlier this month demanding to know what he was doing in the area.
Murphy was off duty at the time of the confrontation. The police detective declined to look at the technician's credentials, kicked the worker out of his car, ripped a light off the vehicle, and threw it at him.
Murphy proceeded to shout a racial slur at the man.
“The victim here was just trying to do his job, when the defendant allegedly harassed him and damaged his vehicle,” Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney said in a statement. “To make matters worse, the defendant is a sworn law enforcement officer, responsible for protecting the rights of citizens, rather than violating them, as is alleged here. Such conduct will not be tolerated in Suffolk County.”
The Suffolk County Police Department’s Hate Crimes Unit arrested Murphy on two counts of criminal mischief as a hate crime and aggravated harassment.
